Insurance is a mandatory document for your visa file

Every Schengen visa application must include a travel insurance certificate covering at least 30,000 euros in medical expenses, valid across the entire Schengen area, including emergency hospitalization and medical repatriation, as required by Article 15 of the Visa Code. Without it, your file is incomplete and will not be accepted.

Where to submit your application

Most Schengen embassies in Nigeria outsource applications to VFS Global. The main centers are in Lagos (Victoria Island area) and Abuja, with appointments booked online on the VFS website of your destination country. France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy and Spain each have dedicated VFS workflows. The officer checks your printed insurance certificate at submission: it must show at least €30,000 coverage, full Schengen validity, and dates matching your trip.

French visas are the most requested from Nigeria (tourism in Paris, family visits, business). Germany, Italy and the Netherlands follow for work, studies and tourism. One Schengen insurance policy covers all member states on a multi-country itinerary, you do not need separate policies for each stop.

The visa is issued by your main destination country, but the insurance certificate must always state validity across the entire Schengen area, not a single country only.

How much does it cost?

For a two-week European trip, compliant plans typically cost 15 to 25 euros per traveler (roughly ₦25,000 to ₦42,000 at current rates), depending on age. Payment on Schengen Cover is in euros by international Visa or Mastercard, GTBank, Access Bank, Zenith or UBA cards with international usage enabled usually work, subject to your bank's daily limits. If naira card limits are too low, a sponsor in the UK, UAE or Europe can purchase online in the applicant's name, which is standard practice for family visa files.

Tourist, business, student or family visit

Whether for a short-stay visa (tourism, business), a long-stay visa or a family visit, the certificate must cover the exact travel dates in the applicant's name. A relative abroad can purchase the policy on behalf of the traveler.
