Why exactly €30,000?
Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Schengen Visa Code) requires « coverage of medical and repatriation expenses of at least 30,000 euros » for every short stay. This is the legal floor: below it, the certificate is rejected at submission.
Is €30,000 enough for the visa?
Yes, if the certificate explicitly states €30,000 (or « thirty thousand euros ») medical coverage, Schengen validity and dates covering your stay. It is the most common and cheapest standard.

Should you choose more than €30,000?
For the visa, no. For peace of mind, sometimes yes: €100,000 or €500,000 plans often cost only a few euros more. The comparison tool shows the price difference to help you decide.
| Ceiling | Visa OK? | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| €30,000 | Yes | Standard visa, healthy profile |
| €100,000 | Yes | Comfort, minor conditions |
How to check your certificate shows €30,000?
Before adding your certificate to the visa file, check five points on the PDF. The coverage amount must appear clearly (« 30,000 EUR » or « thirty thousand euros ») with no ambiguity. Territorial validity must state « Schengen » or list covered countries, never a single state alone.
Coverage dates must span your entire stay, the traveler's name must match the passport exactly, and the issuing insurer must be clearly identifiable. An incomplete certificate on any of these points is one of the most common reasons for files being sent back at the counter.
