Insurance requirements for Indian applicants

Schengen consulates in India strictly apply Visa Code Article 15: your certificate must guarantee at least 30,000 euros in medical expenses, cover emergency hospitalization and medical repatriation, and remain valid across the entire Schengen area, not only in your main destination country (France, Germany, Italy, etc.).

The VFS Global officer or consulate checks the document when you submit your file or at your biometric appointment. An incomplete certificate (dates too short, insufficient amount, single-country validity) often leads to the file being sent back. Every plan on Schengen Cover meets these requirements and delivers a PDF accepted at all VFS centers in India.

Where to submit your application in India (VFS Global & embassies)

The vast majority of Schengen visa applications from India go through VFS Global, the official provider for many European embassies. The busiest centers are in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad. Other cities such as Kochi, Chandigarh, Jalandhar or Jaipur also have submission points depending on your destination country.

Appointments are booked online on the VFS or TLScontact website of your destination country. The printed insurance certificate is on the checklist handed in at the counter: attach the PDF received by email after purchase, in color or black and white. For Spain, some files go through BLS International; the rule is the same, an Article 15 compliant certificate in the exact passport name.

Most popular Schengen destinations from India

Indian applicants most often request visas for France (Paris tourism, family visits in Île-de-France), Germany (business trips, studies, diaspora), Switzerland and Italy (honeymoons, tour packages). One Schengen policy covers all these countries: you do not need a separate policy per destination if your trip includes several member states.

The visa is issued by the Schengen country where you spend the most nights, or your first point of entry if durations are equal. The insurance must always state « Schengen » validity or all member states, regardless of which embassy in Delhi or Mumbai handles your application.

How much does Schengen insurance cost from India?

For a two-week tourist trip to Europe, expect roughly 15 to 25 euros per adult traveler (around ₹1,350 to ₹2,250 at current exchange rates), depending on age and travel season. Seniors aged 65 and over pay more; travelers under 30 get the lowest rates. Comparing before you buy often saves 40–60% for identical coverage.

Payment on Schengen Cover is in euros by international debit or credit card (Visa or Mastercard). HDFC, ICICI, SBI or Axis cards with international usage enabled usually work. If your card does not support foreign currency transactions, a parent or NRI relative in Europe, the UAE or the UK can purchase online in the traveler's name, a very common setup for family visa applications.

Tourism, business, studies or family visit from India

For a tourist or business visa (type C), insurance covers the exact stay dates on your application form, ideally with one day margin before departure and after return. Indian students heading to Germany, France or the Netherlands often need coverage for the first months before joining the local health system, check your embassy's document checklist.

For a family visit, an Indian applicant can have a relative abroad purchase the policy: the certificate must show the traveler's name as on the Indian passport, regardless of who pays. Schengen Cover supports this remote purchase in minutes.
